Ratio, Rate, Unit Rate
Ratio: A comparison of two things with the same units.
EX: boys to girls (they are both people)
Can be written as a fraction, with the word "to" or with colons :
EX: 5/4, 5 to 4, 5:4
Rate: A comparison of two things with different units.
EX: Heart beats per minute (beats and minutes)
160 beats/2 minutes
Unit Rate: A rate with a denominator of 1, such as per minute, per second, per gallon, per
hour and so on.
52 beats/1minute
Complex Fractions: Has a fraction in the numerator, denominator, or both
EX: 1/2 over 2/3 <-- all one fraction
Proportional: If two quantities have a constant ratio or unit rate then they are
proportional.
Nonproportional: When the ratio is not constant
Coordinate Plane: A grid that that contains two number lines that intersect at their zero
points or origins
Quadrants: 4 regions on the coordinate plane
Ordered Pair: Pair of numbers such as (1, 3) used to locate or graph points
X Coordinate: The number that corresponds with the x axis. It is the first number in an
ordered pair. (1, 3)
Y Coordinate: The number that corresponds with the y axis. It is the second number in an
ordered pair. (1, 3)
Y-Axis: Runs vertically or up and down
X-Axis: Runs horizontally or left and right
Origin: The point (0, 0). It is directly in the middle, where the x and y axis intersect.
Rate of Change: How one quantity changes in relation to to another.
Constant Rate of Change: When the rate of change is the same between relations then
it is said to be constant.
